How the calculation works
Your rating is the average of all your reviews. To find how many 5-star reviews (n) lift an average of R across C reviews up to a target T, solve:
(R × C + 5 × n) ÷ (C + n) ≥ T → n ≥ C × (T − R) ÷ (5 − T)
For example, a 4.3 rating across 57 reviews needs 57 × (4.8 − 4.3) ÷ (5 − 4.8) ≈ 143 more 5-star reviews to average 4.8. That’s why steady, automatic review requests matter more than any one-off push.
A perfect 5.0 is only possible if every review is 5 stars, so the calculator works it out for the 4.95 average that Google rounds to 5.0.
Questions
How is my Google rating calculated?
It’s the average of all your star ratings. A business with 40 five-star reviews and 10 one-star reviews averages (40×5 + 10×1) ÷ 50 = 4.2.
Why does one bad review hurt so much?
Because the average moves further from 5 with every low score, and you need several 5-star reviews to pull it back. The fewer reviews you have, the bigger the swing. This calculator shows exactly how many.
Is the rating Google shows rounded?
Yes. Google shows your average to one decimal place, so your exact average can be a little higher or lower than the number on your listing. For an exact answer, use the precise average from Google Business Profile if you have it.
Can I remove bad reviews to raise my rating?
Only reviews that break Google’s policies, such as spam, fake reviews or conflicts of interest, can be flagged for removal. The reliable way to raise your rating is to get more reviews from happy customers.
How long will it take to reach my target?
It depends on how many customers you ask. Businesses that send a review request after every job typically hear back from about a quarter of them. Use the slider to estimate your timeline.
